July 4th

by Thomas Sowell - June 28th, 2011 - Real Clear Politics

The Fourth of July may be just a holiday for fireworks to some people. But it was a momentous day for the history of this country and the history of the world.

Not only did July 4, 1776 mark American independence from England, it marked a radically different kind of government from the governments that prevailed around the world at the time -- and the kinds of governments that had prevailed for thousands of years before.

The American Revolution was not simply a rebellion against the King of England, it was a rebellion against being ruled by kings in general. That is why the opening salvo of the American Revolution was called "the shot heard round the world."

That does not mean that we get to retain our freedom though if we do not understand how it came about. As great as this article is, a typical brilliant analysis by our most brilliant philosopher, the 'people' of the United States have spent the last 3 generations abandoning everything that made us exceptional and made us great. The majority do not understand a single word that Thomas Sowell has said here.

Our children are ignorant of our history and the importance to their daily lives of freedom from government domination. They have been brainwashed into believing that freedom comes from government, just like food and shelter and a general wealth that of course is the 'right' of everyone. They don't have to work for it. Someone else will do the work. They just get to party.

Of course that is a short term delusion. Because being forced by government to give the wealth of your labor to others is nothing but slavery. And slaves will always revolt. America is headed for a revolution that will shatter this nation into 3 or 4 separate nations. It is still up in the air as to whether a single one of them will retain the freedom we grew up with. It is also still up in the air just how bloody that revolution will be. That is what Thomas Sowell left unsaid. Getting from here to that horrible future will not just leave many with no freedom. It will leave many dead in the streets.
